The Central Otago cherry harvest begins in early December.
Early season fruit is destined for the local New Zealand market. As we progress further into December and January our prized export crop is harvested.
As this crop comes on stream our need for more employees increases both in the packhouse and orchard. The trees determine how many people we need, every year these numbers are slightly different.
Changing weather, crop volume and quality often mean hiring decisions need to be made quickly. Even though 90% of our staff are recruited from the pre-season online portal, there is often still opportunities available by contacting our employment office during the season.
Most days, the orchard workers start at 6am and finish around 2.30pm.
Depending on the volume of fruit, packhouse workers usually work between 7am-6pm.
This allows you to enjoy time with newly made friends or explore Cromwell and the surrounding lakes. Fortunately during summer hours, it does not get dark until 10.00pm. We are very lucky to be located in a popular tourist destination.
Foreign nationals must have a valid working holiday visa or work permit, a New Zealand tax number, and a local bank account.

After 10 months of hard work on the orchard, our export cherries are ready to be picked and transported to the 45 South packhouse. We require pickers and orchard logistic staff that treat our fruit with respect, ensuring it reaches the packhouse in optimal condition.
45 South hires over 400 seasonal workers each year to harvest our crop. We require a large number of pickers plus additional support staff to help with bucket pickup, transport to the packhouse and in orchard quality control.
45 South is known as one of the most enjoyable orchard’s to work at in Central Otago. Many seasonal workers return year after year, which creates a real sense of family.
A much smaller team is required for our packhouse operation. Working hours may vary depending on a number of factors. Some long days can be expected, especially in mid too late January. Packhouse work requires concentration and attention to detail.
The Orchard is often very warm and sunny but the packhouse is a cool environment and some warm clothes will be required. Apply to join our packhouse crew in what is a real team environment.
45 South has limited accommodation available at The Chalets Holiday Park. We provide transportation to and from The Chalets, but you will need your own transport should you choose another location.
